Tagged elements in a document are rendered by CSS rule according to the specified CSS properties. One important feature of CSS is to specify how a document to be presented on different media. And therefore some CSS properties are only designed for certain media.

Media Types

The media names of possible media types are.

all

to specify for all devices

braille

to specify for braille tactile feedback devices.

embossed

to specify for paged braille printers.

handheld

to specify for handheld devices (typically small screen, limited bandwidth).

print

to specify for paged material and for documents viewed on screen in print preview mode.

projection

to specify for projected presentation devices

screen

to specify for primarily color computer screens.

speech

to specify for speech synthesizers. CSS2 had a similar media type called 'aural"

tty

to specify for media using a fixed-pitch character grid (such as teletypes, terminals, or portable devices with limited display capabilities).

tv

to specify for television-type devices (low resolution, color, limited-scrollability screens, sound available).

Media Groups

Media devices can also be grouped according to the features of media device.

  • continuous or paged
  • visual, audio, speech, or tactile
  • grid (for character grid devices), or bitmap
  • iteractive (for devices that allow user interaction), or static
  • all
