Adjective

An adjective is usually defined as a word used to modify the meaning of something, a noun, a pronoun, by adding something additional. Something additional can be description, information, etc. In other words, an adjective is used to described something or thing only, not the other parts of speech.

Intrinsically and Extrinsically

There are many ways to classify or describe adjectives. According to the nature of an adjective, describing something, adjectives can be grouped into into two categories. In general, an adjective can be used to describe an attribute of the described thing intrinsically or to express information related to the described thing extrinsically.

Attributes of a thing usually refer to the adjectives of quality or descriptive adjectives to describe the kind or quality of a thing, i.e. intrinsic information with the information content of the thing itself. Sometimes descriptive adjectives formed from proper nouns are also classified as proper adjectives for identification purpose.

Information related to a thing usually refers to those non-intrinsic or extrinsic information with the information content is related to the thing only. Extrinsic information includes adjectives of quantity of describing how much, adjectives of number or numeral adjectives of describing how many or what order, demonstrative adjectives of describing which thing,  interrogative adjectives of describing thing in an interrogative manner, emphasizing adjectives of describing emphasis on which thing, exclamatory adjectives of describing reaction on thing.

Attributively and Predicatively

Although an adjective is usually used along with the thing to which the adjective describing as an attribute or epithet, sometimes, an adjective is usually used along with a verb forming part of the predicate of the sentence. An adjective is used attributively is called attributive adjective, while an adjective is used predicatively is called predicative adjective. Sometimes, a adjective can only be used predicatively.

Types of Adjectives

In general, adjectives can be classified into several types of description and information.

  1. Adjective of Quality: An adjective of quality is also called descriptive adjective. A descriptive adjective is a "word"  used to describe the kind or quality of a thing, that is the thing of what kind is described. Adjectives formed from proper nouns are usually used to describe the kind or quality of a thing particularly and therefore adjectives formed from proper nouns are sometimes called proper adjectives.
  2. Adjective of Quantity: An adjective of quantity is a "word" used to describe the quantity of a thing, that is the thing of how much is described.
  3. Adjective of Number: An adjective of number is also called numeral adjectives. A numeral adjective is a "word" used to describe the number of thing, that is the thing of how many is described.
  4. Demonstrative Adjective: A demonstrative adjective is a "word" used to indicate the one to which the concerned thing is related.
  5. Relative Adjective: A relative adjective is a "word" used to indicate the one to which the concerned thing is referred in the other clause of the sentence
  6. Interrogative Adjective: An interrogative adjective is a "word" used to indicate the question asking about the concerned thing is being related.
  7. Possessive Adjective: A possessive adjective is a "word" used to indicate the ownership of the thing being concerned.
  8. Distributive Adjective: A distributive adjective is a "word" used to indicate the distributive state of the thing being concerned.
  9. Indefinite Adjective: An indefinite adjective is a "word" used to indicate the non-specific sense of the thing being concerned.
  10. Emphasizing Adjective An emphasizing adjective is a "word" used to stress the state of the thing being concerned.
  11. Exclamatory Adjective An exclamatory adjective is a "word" used to express an exclamation on the thing being concerned.
  12. Proper Adjective: A proper adjective is a "word" formed from proper noun used to indicate the proper noun properties of the thing being concerned.
